Spectacular aurora from Norway during holidays…

In the past 3 weeks we were on holiday in Norway. We had a great stay there and of course I had some silent hopes that we could maybe see some auroras. I never dared to hope for what we got to see.

Around the 9th August there were some warnings of incoming CME’s and that they could create some nice auroras. Unfortunately it was very cloudy where we were so I was afraid that I would miss it, but the warnings changed slowly to a few days later and on August 12th/13th it was expected to get a nice aurora show. In the meantime we had moved towards Forde in Norway, which is around +62 degrees north so I had my hopes up, but the clouds seemed to be spoiling it again.

Around 23 hours in the evening I first thought about going to sleep, but went out one more time to see if there was some improvement. Taking some photos with my phone I noticed some green shining in between the clouds and could see there were starting to come some holes in the clouds. So I put up my camera and started to make images. Then the show started up. I called my children and my wife and the saw the waves moving around the sky and that was really nice. They went to bed around 1 o’clock and I stayed up to see what would come more. Around 2 o’clock the sky seemed to explode and I had the show of my life. Here I will share some images and a timelapse that I made.

Everything was made using my Nikon D810a with a Samyang 12mm lens. All are 5 second exposures made at ISO800.
